An auctioneer is defined by the Property, Stock and Business Agents Act 2002 as anyone:
- who, in the course of trade or business and at an auction (or a proposed auction), acts as an auctioneer or sells for reward (whether monetary or otherwise) any land or any livestock or
- who sells or offers for sale, or who attempts to sell, any land or any livestock by way of auction or
- who engages in any other activity that is prescribed for the purposes of this definition.
Qualification requirements for real estate auctioneer accreditation
The holder of a real estate agent’s licence has approved qualifications for accreditation as a real estate auctioneer if a registered training organisation has issued the person with a statement of attainment or a qualification, which demonstrates competency in both of the following units of competency:
- CPPDSM4004A — Conduct auction
- CPPDSM4019A — Prepare for auction and complete sale.
Students undertaking the course take approximately 1 - 2 weeks to finish. However, there is no time restriction and you may choose to complete studies in more or less time.
The cost of applying for an Accreditation as an Auctioneer with NSW Fair Trading is $69.00 (as of July 2017).
Training and assessment
Assessment is competency based. Competency-based assessment is largely activity-based and practical. However, competence also implies that an individual demonstrates an understanding of the knowledge that is the basis of the practical task being carried out.
There is a combination of assessment tasks that require written responses and include:
- multiple choice questions
- short answer questions
- and either 1 or 2 of the following:-
- case study
- workplace project
- case study
Students are assessed according to whether or not they have achieved the performance criteria for each element specified in the units of competency they are undertaking. This method of assessment judges performance against a prescribed standard, not against other students. Students are assessed as 'competent' or 'not yet competent'.

Assessment is conducted within approximately 48 hours of submission.
Completed assignment may be uploaded onto the website for marking – there is a 2mg upload limited, or emailed or posted to the College.
